Leadership that gets things spun

At the close of the April 23rd Council meeting Clr. Gallo announced “As a result of personal matters, hopefully for a short time, I will be resigning from all committees. Effective immediately.”

You can watch it at the 2.08 mark on the video here:

Whatever personal matters Clr. Gallo is facing I hope that he can resolve them in a short time as he identified, and return to the responsibilies of the job he was elected to.

In the meantime we now have to deal with the defecit of Clr. Gallo’s announced absence.

One of the things Mrakas’ brand of leadership has done is a piss poor appointment of committees this term.

First off bylaws were contravened multiple times to allow citizen members to sit on more that one committee. Why is this necessary?

Equally eye-brow raising is the inexcusable imbalance of council members on committes this term.

I have pointed out previously that Gallo sits on the 2nd most committees of all council members (4, chair of 2). Gallos is only behind Clr. Weese (5, chair of 2, vice chair of 1 in addition to being on the Sport Aurora board) which is a staggering amount of work for a rookie councillor, all while long time council members have next to no committee responsibilities.

So vacating committees would have little effect say if you were Clr. Kim or Thompson who inexplicably sit on 1 commitee each and only chair a single committee between the two.

But when Gallo who sits on double and chairs double the committees of these 2 other members combined well then you have multiple committees scrambling to fill the gaps.

That said Gallo’s absence will likely not be noticed on the library board that he failed to attend over a years worth of Library Board meetings

but it is more problematic on the Heritage Advisory Committee which he is, or was chair.

The HAC committee, which I have delegated at twice this term recently, has been subjected to a resignation of another of itse mmembers, this being the vice chair.

This member was absent from the November 6th 2023 meeting and 3 meetings have been held since ( Feb 12th, March 18th and April 8th ) and in all of these meetings the committee has not held an election to replace the vice chair position.

Why not?

I could understand possibly one meeting, but three?

There is no need to wait until the member vacancy is filled to elect the committee’s vice chair. The following meeting where this member resigned there should have been a vote to replace this vice chair position but none was taken. No mention of the member’s absence, they just proceeded as though it was business as usual, when it was clearly not.

By not getting such a simple thing done this commiittee is currently without a chair and vice chair.

Instead of effective leadership Aurorans get to witness a game of musical chairs interrupted by a firehose of selfies on social media.
