take the bring your own reusable coffee cup pledge…

…because the “leadership that gets things done” on Aurora council won’t.

Back in March Tom Mrakas pounced on a selfie opportunity when the town banned a recyclable single use plastic water bottle container from facilities and meetings:

In the Auroran he was quoted as saying “I am thrilled, from an environmental perspective, of eliminating single use bottled water. I would like to see it go even further but overall this is a great first step.”

For someone who is all hot to trot about bringing reusable water containers it was disappointing to see how that started yesterday morning with a piping hot cup of hypocrisy:

Not so great.

Unlike plastic water bottles single use Tim Hortons coffee cups, like the one Tom bought are not recyclable in York Region:

Not only do they go straight to landfill at an alarming rate, if they do end up in the recycle stream contaminate the paper collected as council was made aware of through a recent update on the Regions Integrated Waste Management Plan:

If Mrakas is so concerned about the major impact on our environment, he should know that that in 2010, Canadians used an estimated 1.5 billion disposable coffee cups, equivalent to more than half a million trees.

Even university and college kids are greeted with communications to change their habits:

But here in Aurora, the message Tom Mrakas is sending is clear.

Recyclable water bottles are evil, but enjoy your coffee from a single use cup that ends up in landfill.

If you’re considering meeting with Tom for a coffee during his election campaign, ask him if he is bringing a reusable container.  Or better yet, skip the coffee and bring along a plastic water bottle.  They are recyclable almost everywhere in town.

Watts on your mind?
