Deck the Bingo Halls with boughs of folly

Last year saw a departure with lighting the town’s mature tree at town hall to having a cut tree hauled into town park for this purpose.

This year our Mayor couldn’t wait to get his selfie with it:

This change over to do the Christmas tree lighting at town park was a conscious decision, so how does it align with, or is supported by the Town’s environmental action plan?

An average Christmas Tree has a carbon footprint of 3.5kg co2. This tree looks to be easily 3-4 times that.

Add to that the environmental cost of the truck transporting it in and out, and the energy spent to chip it, repeatedly year after year.

If you’re going to use a real tree then use one of the ones in the park. Don’t truck one in for fucks sake.

Or if you want one that it Christmas tree shape then plant one.

But the real icing on the Christmas cake is that no one on council or staff spoke up to the hypocrisy while rolling out a Holiday themed “Eco Bingo”:

The mental gymnastics required to suggest buying/transporting and disposing of natural trees for a month-long display as being better for the environment than the sustainable planted trees the town already has access to should qualify the Mayor for the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame.
